What exactly is pool surface resurfacing, and how is it done? The new surface can't be applied to an existing pool that has been coated with fiberglass, plaster, pebble or all tile. It is necessary to prepare the surface for a new coating of plaster or pebble. This can be done by either cutting out the plaster, bonding coating the surface with sand blasting, hydroblasting or chipping the existing plaster. The National Plasterers Council states that all of these methods are acceptable, however, each method has its advantages and disadvantages. Now you can apply the plaster, quartz, exposed pebbles, glass beads or polished pool coat to the surface after it has been prepared.
There are two types, exposed and polished. Exposed means that the pebbles are completely exposed leaving a rough texture. On the other side, polished creates a smooth texture so that the surface is flat.
I personally wouldn’t apply a fiberglass coating because I don’t want to breathe the stuff when applying. The catalyst for isophthalic resins is Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) – no Bueno! You are probably okay rolling on an epoxy. Just beware of fumes or gases when applying coatings in unventilated areas.
